Florida Endemic Plants in Broward County

Plants that grow natively nowhere else in the world, except Florida, are Florida endemic. Some of these Florida endemic plants grow natively in Broward and other Florida counties. Endemic plants are interesting to some of us because they are particularly adapted to this place on earth. Either their niche requirements occur nowhere else, or they haven't migrated. Sometimes a special relatiosnhip between one insect and one species is required for pollination. A few are presumed extirpated in Broward County (note double asterisks).

Future research will reveal more about the native status of these plants and their taxa. The information below is based on the Floristic Inventory of South Florida completed in 2002 and published online by the Institute for Regional Conservation. If you would like to suggest a correction or improvement to any information on this page (on elsewhere on our site), we want to hear from you (Richard@Brownscombe.net).

Click the links below to see the plant photo (in most cases) and additional information in the Floristic Inventory of South Florida (FISF). Some species have additional icon links on the FISF webpage: 1) to the USDA database, 2) the Atlas of Florida Vascular Plants, and/or 3) to the IRC Natives for Your Neighborhood.

*Listed as a Broward native only in the Atlas of Florida Vascular Plants, not according to the FISF.
**Presumed extirpated or possibly extirpated in Broward County.
***Doubtful, only listed in the Atlas of Florida Vascular Plants with no online specimen, not listed in the FISF.
