Everglades Orchids with Chuck McCartney

On March 12, 2014, Chuck McCartney, an acclaimed orchid expert, took us into the Everglades to find wild orchids. We searched one area for a particularly large Cowhorn Orchid that was likely to be in bloom. Finally, we found it, but very much smaller. Most of it was gone. Two photos here show this still-magnificent plant with its first large inflorescence of the year, not quite fully open. We would like to think it blew down in a storm and rangers replanted it, but it was far more likely poached, the greatest threat to wild orchids. It was a pleasure to see the Butterfly Orchids producing seed.

These photos were taken by Tom Gire capturing not only the orchids, but Chuck's great love for them.
